More than a year ago two congregations, Prince of Peace (ELCA) and Holy Trinity (Episcopal) in Gillette joined forces to meet their common goal of nurturing young minds and souls in the way of the Lord. Together they chose and hired a person to oversee the youth activities of the two churches. With a bubbly personality and a caring attitude, Bo Burch took on the youth programs with enthusiasm. There have been regular Wednesday evening meetings and many projects and events involving both congregations. Junior High and Senior High youth from both churches have been busy with community and church projects. Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers and soup mixes packaged by the kids have helped the group earn money for a trip to Mexico this summer.
About a year ago, Bo and her volunteer assistants began planning a state wide youth event for February 23-25, 2007. The weekend finally arrived, along with fine February weather, 19 participants from across the state. And 21 people who served as staff. As yet an unnamed event, the participants quickly chose to call the gathering “Because” – because we are called to serve; because of salvation; because we are His children; because He is the I AM.
The weekend was busy, with lots of good food, silly games, small group time, singing, praying, dancing, a swim party, talks by the staff, and the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit. Bo, the participants and staff, Holy Trinity and Prince of Peace all consider the weekend a valuable and successful experience for everyone involved.
